Orthodontics is a specialized discipline of dentistry that concentrates on the proper alignment of teeth and jawbones. Orthodontics can be recommended to patients for a variety of reasons. Crooked teeth not only detract from one's appearance, but are also harder to clean and are therefore more prone to tooth decay and periodontal disease. Teeth that do not properly fit together can cause stress on chewing muscle which can lead to headaches, TMJ syndrome and pain in the head, neck and back. The benefits of orthodontic treatment include a healthier mouth and a more pleasing appearance.
The first step in determining if you are a candidate for orthodontic treatment is to visit our office for a free consultation. In our office we use a wide variety of orthodontic appliances including traditional metal wire and brackets and discrete options such as invisalign. We are eager to make your orthodontic experience fit your lifestyle, and can discuss each option with you. At your first visit, the doctor will determine if treatment is recommended by examining your smile, teeth, bite and temporomandibular joints. If treatment is recommended, our team will complete a comprehensive orthodontic exam. This exam will include collecting your complete dental and medical history, taking x-rays, photographs, and impressions of your teeth. From this information the doctor will be able to properly diagnose the problem and determine the treatment that should be used and then review the proposed treatment with you.
